Main Purpose of Position Due to COVID-19 and the changes to college requirements during the pandemic, NSW Health may make changes to the recruitment process. Assess and manage, under supervision, patients presenting to the Emergency Department and admitted to inpatient wards when rotating to inpatient specialities.

The position supports meeting the requirements for provisional training with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM).
Position Requirements The Provisional Trainee will be required to participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to day, evening and night shifts across a seven day roster.

The Provisional Trainee is responsible for:
• Assessing and managing patients, including arranging appropriate investigations, reviewing and interpreting results, prescribing appropriate medications and organising referrals and consultations
• Maintaining accurate medical records and completing discharge letters/summaries, referral letters, medication prescriptions and death certificates accurately and in a timely way
• Consulting with and communicating with medical staff in the Emergency Department and other speciality teams in the hospital in regard to patient management plans, diagnostic requests and consultations
• Communicating with nursing staff, allied health and other members of the health care team in regard to management plans, diagnostic reports and consultations
• Ensuring effective follow up and continuity of care of the patients leaving the Emergency Department.
• Communicating with patients and family members in a respectful way

Local Background & Environment Campbelltown Hospital is a teaching hospital of Western Sydney University Medical School. It offers most specialties and the Emergency Department is the third largest, in terms of presentations, in the State.
It is situated in a semi-rural environment 60KM South West of Sydney in one of the fastest growing population centres of the State.

A significant proportion of the population are immigrants and 28% of the presentations are paediatric.

Neurosurgical and Cardiothoracic services are currently unavailable but can be accessed readily at the tertiary referral hospital, Liverpool. Campbelltown Hospital provides limited vascular and ENT services. Patients requiring definitive care under these specialties are transferred to Liverpool Hospital.

The facilities available in the hospital, such as:
- Radiology / Radiography - 24 hour Radiology available with offsite reporting via the Centricity Web system after hours
- Pathology / technician - 24 hour Pathology with onsite facilities during hours and offsite at Liverpool, afterhours
- The Hospital has VMOs / Staff Specialists in the following sub-specialties
General medicine
Respiratory Medicine
Rehab Medicine
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Mental health
Palliative Medicine
Intensive Care medicine

Liverpool Hospital is the networked tertiary referral hospital. It is situated 20 minutes away by road. The Emergency Departments of both Hospitals are networked whereby, Staff Specialists work at both sites

Transport times by road ambulance is usually 20 minutes but Emergency Retrieval Services are available

The position will require a Medicare Provider Number for purposes of prescribing and referrals only.

Supervision Arrangements The Provisional trainee will provide supervision to interns, postgraduate year two (PGY2) and other junior medical officers working in the Emergency Medicine department
Challenges/Problem Solving Major challenges for the Trainees include:
• Balancing mandated training and education requirements with service provision, within the limitations of a busy public health service.
• Understands the key performance indicator benchmarks for the ED and participates in patient flow initiatives
• Maintaining a professional role and responsibility for patient care, in close liaison with supervising consultants.
• Working collaboratively with other staff in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Responsibility for supervision and teaching of more junior medical staff.
Decision Making The Provisional Trainee’s level of decision making is determined locally based on the skills and experience of the trainee.
Communication The Provisional Trainee works as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and will communicate with patients and their relatives, medical colleagues, nursing staff, allied health staff and support staff as part of their role

Selection Criteria 1: MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

2: Selected into Fellowship training or has applied for Fellowship training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). Must provide evidence of either selection or application into Fellowship training
